What Is It About
Brigands and Breadknives is the third book set in Travis Baldree’s cozy fantasy world, following Legends and Lattes and Bookshops and Bonedust. This one leans a little more into adventure than its predecessors but keeps the warmth and charm that made those books so easy to love.
The Good Stuff
Fern is a delight and Zyll the goblin is an absolute standout. The characters are the heart of this book and Baldree has a gift for creating people you just want to spend time with. The cozy vibe that defines this world is still very much present and that alone makes it worth picking up. If you loved the previous two books you will find plenty to enjoy here.
Where It Falls Short
I’ll be honest, the story didn’t grab me quite the same way the others did. It’s not bad by any stretch but I just didn’t connect with it on the same level as Legends and Lattes or Bookshops and Bonedust. The adventure elements are a fun addition but something about this one felt like it didn’t quite reach the same heights as what came before it.
Should You Read It
If you have read the first two this is still absolutely worth your time. Don’t let a slightly less engaging story put you off. Baldree’s world is warm and inviting and spending more time in it is never a bad thing.
Four stars and an easy recommendation for fans of the series
If You Haven’t Read the Others
Start with Legends and Lattes and then Bookshops and Bonedust. You’ll thank me later.
