Ready Player One Vibes
If you picked this up and thought it felt a little like Ready Player One, you’re not wrong. Especially early on. Kid from nothing gets access to a massive virtual world and suddenly has a shot at something bigger than the life he was handed. That hook works and Rowland leans into it well.
The story follows Esil, a young guy who grew up with nothing, spending his days doing grunt work in the data mines of Pangea while watching wealthy players live out adventures he can only dream about. When a lucky discovery changes everything, he gets his shot. What follows is a fun underdog story across three books that kept me entertained throughout.
What Works
The world building is enjoyable and the underdog angle is genuinely easy to root for. Esil is a likable character and the series has a good heart to it. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and that works in its favor. I listened to the whole trilogy on audiobook and it was a solid listen, the kind of thing that makes a commute fly by.
Keep Your Expectations in Check
I’ll be honest, it’s not a complicated story. It’s fun and a little simple and that’s perfectly fine. Not every book needs to be dense and challenging. Sometimes you just want to get lost in a world for a while and root for someone to win. Pangea Online delivers that.
Who Should Read This
Here’s the thing. If you’re a seasoned LitRPG reader looking for something with a lot of depth and complexity this probably isn’t it. But if you’re new to the genre, especially if you’re younger or looking for a entry point into LitRPG, this is a great place to start. It’s accessible, it’s fun, and it’ll leave you wanting to see what else the genre has to offer.
Just go with it, you’ll have a good time.
